Alpha Hydroxyl Acids (AHA)
An alpha hydroxyl acid is derived from natural sources,
they occur naturally in certain fruits and foods. For example:
-
Glycolic
acid comes from sugar cane
-
Citric
acid comes from citrus fruits
-
Malic
acid comes from apples
-
Tartaric
acid comes from grapes
-
Lactic
acid comes from sour milk
-
Salicylic
acid comes from the bark of a spearmint tree
Of all AHA’s Glycolic acid has the smallest molecule, so
it penetrates faster than all others.
How do
they work?
First:
AHAs penetrate the layers of the skin and work in two ways:
AHAs loosen or dissolve the glue like substance that holds the outer layer of
cells to each other and to the underlying epidermis. These thick, piled up,
clingy cells are responsible for the appearance of dry, rough, scaly skin, and
brown age or sun damage spots. When the "glue" is loosened, the thick stratum
corneum is sloughed away leaving the skin with a smooth, moist, refined, vibrant
appearance. AHAs also loosen the dead cells which block the follicles and cause
acne. Once the follicle is clean, the AHA will continue to work and prevent acne
from reoccurring.
Second:
AHA affect deeper layers of the skin by regenerating collagen and elastin. They
only attack and renew cells that are damaged. Clinical studies show marked
disappearance of fine lines and reduction of coarse, deeper wrinkles.
What are
the benefits?
-
With regular use of AHA products the
skin will have:
-
Healthier appearance
-
Increased elasticity & firmness
-
Diminished fine lines & reduction
of coarse, deeper wrinkles
-
Diminished and reduced comedones (acne
lesions)
-
Improved texture, color, tone and
moisture content
